Author – Karl Baird

Karl Baird is the General Manager of Paws Playgrounds and has a science degree background in animal behaviour and wildlife conservation.

Over the past 12 years, Karl has had the opportunity to work with and care for a remarkable range of animals. His experience includes dogs and cats, as well as bats, birds, turtles, whale sharks, African painted dogs, elephants, lions and other wildlife.

Dogs have always held a particularly important place in Karl’s life. He grew up with two King Charles Spaniels, Bonnie and Clyde, who taught him lasting lessons about care, patience and unconditional love. Although they passed away more than a decade ago, the influence they had on his life continues to shape the way he approaches animal care today.

Since then, Karl has travelled internationally to expand his knowledge and gain hands-on experience working with animals in different environments. He has cared for dogs belonging to family, friends and clients, worked as a freelance dog walker and sitter with breeds ranging from small companion dogs to large working breeds, and spent time assisting a rescue for stray dogs in Thailand.

His experience at the rescue helped deepen his understanding of dogs that are sometimes labelled as difficult, troublesome or dangerous. It showed him the importance of looking beyond a dog’s immediate behaviour to understand the fear, uncertainty or past experiences that may be influencing it.

Karl believes that when people challenge their assumptions and give a fearful or misunderstood dog patience, consistency and care, the results can be incredibly rewarding.

Karl does not currently have a dog at home, so he channels his lifelong passion for dogs into caring for the many dogs who join the team at Paws Playgrounds. His practical experience with dogs of different ages, breeds, sizes, personalities and play styles helps inform his writing about dog daycare, supervised play, social needs, boarding and life with dogs in Toronto.
